The Culinary Series

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

The ‘Culinary Series’ of winemaker dinners here at The Rees Hotel in Queenstown often sell out within days of being released and are the brainchild of rising star Chef, Ben Batterbury of True South Dining Room overlooking the shores of Lake Wakatipu.

Six times a year, we host a gathering of like minded food and wine lovers in a low key and relaxing atmosphere to enjoy genius creations from a Chef who gets a kick out of the culinary challenge of harmonising aromatic flavours with exquisite vintages – with his signature twist.

Invited winemakers personally hold a tasting that’s matched with a five course degustation journey. No-one knows what Chef will reveal until they’re served on the night. Guests are entertained with plenty of tales from the kitchen both by Chef and our guest winemaker.

The Culinary Series is about, “three things really, it’s about great wine, great food and having fun. We try to keep them quite relaxed its not all wine toffs coiffing and deliberating. It’s about giving people the chance to drink some great wines that may not be readily available and some slightly crazy food that should make everyone talk about it. There is of course some sound knowledge to be gained from meeting the winemakers,” says Chef Ben.

Past events have starred the finest drops from Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay, Mishas Vineyard in Central Otago, Kumeu River in Auckland and Millton Wines of Gisborne, along with a hand-picked selection from other critically acclaimed, premium wineries.

In the past, our guests have enjoyed the company of esteemed Judges and winemakers; Olly Masters, Michael Brajkovich and James Millton. All our Culinary Series have been roaring successes selling out in record time, attracting media attention and proving popular from first ticket release.

The next Culinary Series will be held on 1st October and is a double billing, showcasing the best of the New World wine from Escarpment in Martinborough and Bilancia in the Hawkes Bay. Well known winemakers, Larry McKenna and Warren Gibson are flying in especially for the night and no doubt will keep guests enthralled!
